Astrocartography lines and their meaning

Astrocartography lines are the places on Earth where a planet was rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at the moment you were born. Each of the 12 bodies has four lines, 48 in all, and each line carries a planet's themes into one area of life.

Find your lines

What an astrocartography line is

At any moment, every planet sits in a definite spot in the sky. Somewhere on Earth it is just rising in the east, somewhere else it is setting in the west, along one band it stands at its highest point, and on the far side of the globe it lies underfoot. Join each set of places and you get four lines per planet.

Astrocartography draws those lines for the moment of your birth. The technique was popularized from the late 1970s by the American astrologer Jim Lewis. Astrologers read a place near a line as a place where that planet's themes are emphasized in your life. It is a symbolic tradition, not a forecast: a line describes a flavor, never an outcome.

The four line types

The four line types are the four angles that frame every birth chart. Each one points to a different part of life.

  • AC line (Ascendant or rising line): the planet was rising in the east. It is read as being about you: how you come across, your energy, your body and first impressions.
  • DC line (Descendant or setting line): the planet was setting in the west. Its theme is other people: partners, close friends, collaborators and rivals.
  • MC line (Midheaven line): the planet stood at the top of the sky. It is linked with career, reputation and your public direction.
  • IC line (Imum Coeli line): the planet was underfoot, on the far side of the Earth. It points to home, family, roots and private life.

On the map, MC and IC lines run straight from north to south, because a planet crosses the whole of one meridian at the same instant. AC and DC lines are curves, since the horizon meets the sky at a different slant at every latitude. MC and AC lines are drawn solid, IC and DC lines dashed, and each planet has its own color. How to read the map, step by step.

What each planet brings

The angle tells you where in life a line acts; the planet tells you how. Pick a body to compare its four lines side by side.

Are some lines good and others bad?

Tradition calls Venus and Jupiter lines the gentle ones and Saturn, Mars and Pluto lines the demanding ones. In practice astrologers read every line both ways. A Venus line can feel pleasant but unproductive; a Saturn line can be the place where you finally build something that lasts.

A better question than "good or bad" is "good for what". Someone looking for a quiet base reads an IC line very differently from someone chasing a promotion, who looks at MC lines. The best places by theme view sorts your lines by what you want from a place, and a map is always one input among many, next to work, visas, cost of living and family.

The best astrocartography lines for love, career and home

"Best" only makes sense next to a goal. Each goal points to one angle first (DC for partners, MC for work, IC for home, AC for yourself), then to the planets tradition links with it. The lines astrologers name most often for each goal:

How close to a line counts

There is no agreed distance. Many astrologers give the most weight to places within a few hundred kilometers of a line, and some count lines farther out. Click any place on the map and it lists the exact distance, in kilometers and miles, to every nearby line, so you can apply whichever rule you prefer.

Lines also cross. Where two planets were on angles at the same moment, astrologers speak of parans, read along a band of latitude around the world. To see how your whole chart looks from one city, open its relocation chart.

All 48 lines

Each line has its own page: what it is in the sky, what astrologers associate it with for love, work and home, and its strengths and challenges.

What are astrocartography lines?

Astrocartography lines are the places on Earth where a planet was rising, setting, overhead or underfoot at the moment you were born. Each planet has four: the AC, DC, MC and IC lines. Astrologers read a place near a line as a place where that planet's themes are emphasized, in the area of life its angle stands for.

How close to an astrocartography line do I need to be?

There is no agreed distance. Many astrologers give the most weight to places within a few hundred kilometers of a line and read its effect as fading farther out; some still count a line at 700 km or more. Click any place on the map and it shows the exact distance to every nearby line, in kilometers and miles.

Which astrocartography lines are good?

No line is good for everything. Tradition calls Venus and Jupiter lines the gentle ones and Saturn, Mars and Pluto lines the demanding ones, but a Venus line can be too comfortable to get things done, and a Saturn line can be where you build something lasting. Ask what you want from a place, then read the lines for that goal.

How many astrocartography lines are there?

This map draws 48: four lines (AC, DC, MC and IC) for each of 12 bodies. The bodies are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, the North Node and Chiron. You can switch any of them off in the Lines tab to keep the map easy to read.

Why are some astrocartography lines curved?

MC and IC lines run straight from pole to pole because a planet crosses a whole meridian at the same instant. AC and DC lines curve because the horizon meets the sky at a different slant at every latitude. Far north or south they bend together and stop at latitude 90 minus the planet's declination, beyond which it did not rise or set.
