Mercury IC line
The Mercury IC line, also called the Mercury Imum Coeli line, runs where Mercury lay underfoot at your birth. The theme turns homeward: study at the kitchen table, long talks with relatives and a mind that returns to the past to understand it.

What the Mercury IC line is
At your birth moment, Mercury was directly beneath your feet on the far side of the Earth along one meridian. That straight line from pole to pole is your Mercury IC line, shown dashed in mint green. The Mercury line page sets it next to the planet's other three lines.
It runs opposite your Mercury MC line and close to your Sun IC line, near the middle of the night side on the globe view.
What astrologers associate with the Mercury IC line
The IC is the angle of home, family, roots and private life. Mercury brings thought, talk and learning. Tradition reads a place where your mind works best at home and keeps circling back to where you come from.
Family history, old letters, a parent's stories, the language your grandparents spoke: these are classic themes. So is a busy household with people coming and going.
Love and relationships
Love here is described as domestic conversation: talking things through at the kitchen table, a partner who is also your housemate and sounding board.
The caution is bickering over small things, and household logistics taking over the conversation. Astrologers suggest keeping time to talk about something other than chores.
Work and reputation
This is a private line, so tradition links it with work from home rather than public roles: remote work, research, tutoring from home, writing a memoir or a family history.
The challenges are visibility and switching off. Work can be done well and noticed by few, and it is hard to stop thinking about it when the desk is in the living room.
Home and daily life
The home is busy in this reading: books, papers, conversations, visitors and plans. Some astrologers add a tendency to rearrange or move home more often, in keeping with Mercury's changeable nature.
A mind that looks back can be rich, helping you understand family patterns. It can also mean dwelling on old conversations longer than they deserve.

Visiting versus living there
A visit near your Mercury IC line suits a family history trip: archives, old addresses, relatives with stories to tell, or learning the family language. It also suits a quiet study retreat.
Living there is read as home becoming your study and your meeting place. For a real move, work, cost of living, visas, family and language matter far more than a line. See best places for home.
How close you need to be
No distance is agreed; bands of a few hundred kilometers are common, and the map gives the exact km and miles from any city.
If you only know your birth time roughly, be careful with this line. An hour of uncertainty spreads it across 15 degrees of longitude, about 1,665 km at the equator. Set the uncertainty band and the map shades the whole zone where it could fall.
When it crosses other lines
Mercury takes on its neighbors' tone, so crossings and parans matter. Mercury underfoot while the Moon was rising is read as heartfelt family conversations. Mercury underfoot while Saturn was overhead is read as study done with discipline, or family duties that need careful planning.
Is the Mercury IC line good for working from home?
Astrologers often name the Mercury IC line for home-based work, study and research, since it puts Mercury at the base of your chart. Tradition pictures a desk at home, books and calls. The caution is switching off when the desk is in the living room. Whether remote work suits you depends on far more than a line.
Mercury IC vs Moon IC line?
Both are home lines. The Moon IC line is read as emotional belonging, memory and nesting. The Mercury IC line is read as a home full of talk, study, visitors and thinking about the past, including family stories and old letters. Many readings call the Moon IC the feeling home and the Mercury IC the thinking home.
Is the Mercury IC line good for studying?
Tradition links it with quiet study at home, research and reading, so it is often mentioned for distance learning or a thesis year. A busy household is part of the reading too, so a quiet room may need protecting. For learning in a busy, social setting, the Mercury AC line is read as the livelier choice.
What if my Mercury IC line runs through my hometown?
Astrologers read that as a link between your thinking and your roots: family stories, the local way of talking, the place you first learned. It does not mean you must stay. Check your birth time first, since four minutes of error moves every line one degree of longitude, about 111 km (69 miles) at the equator.
