What your Moon sign is

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through when you were born. Astrologers read it as your emotional nature: what makes you feel safe, how you react under stress, what you need from home and from the people close to you.

If the Sun sign is the self you show and grow into, the Moon sign is the self that comes out in private, when you are tired, at ease or upset. Many people say their Moon sign describes them better than their Sun sign, especially at home.

Do you need your birth time?

Usually not. The Moon is the fastest body in the sky: it moves about 13 degrees a day and changes sign every two to three days. On most days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, so your birth date and place are enough.

On the other days, the Moon crosses from one sign into the next at some point during your birth day. The calculator checks this for the time zone of your birth place. If it happened, you see both signs, both readings and the local time of the change: born before it, your Moon is in the first sign; after it, in the second. Your birth time settles it, so add it if you can find it.

With a birth time, you also get the Moon's exact degree and your Moon lines on the map.

Moon sign and Sun sign

Your Sun sign comes from your birthday alone and is the same for everyone born in the same few weeks. Your Moon sign changes every two to three days, so it separates people born in the same month. Astrologers often read the two together: the Sun as what you want, the Moon as what you need. When they are in signs of the same element (fire, earth, air or water) the two are often described as pulling in the same direction; when they are in very different signs, as a tension you learn to work with.

The third piece is your rising sign, which needs an exact birth time. The birth chart calculator shows all three, with every other planet.

Your Moon on the map

The Moon was also somewhere in the sky at your birth: overhead for some places on Earth, rising for others, setting or underfoot for others still. Draw those places and you get your four Moon lines. Astrologers associate them with home, family, moods and a sense of belonging, so they are a natural place to start if you are wondering where you might feel at home.

  • Moon IC line: where the Moon was beneath your feet, read as the most private, home-centered of the four.
  • Moon MC line: where it was overhead, read as being seen, and cared about, in public.
  • Moon AC line: where it was rising, read as wearing your feelings on the surface.
  • Moon DC line: where it was setting, read as close, nurturing relationships.

Moon lines are sensitive places, not only comfortable ones: astrologers also link them with stronger moods and with old family patterns. For places ranked by every home-related line, see best places for home.

How it is calculated

The Moon's position comes from the same engine as the map, checked against NASA JPL Horizons; see the method page. The zodiac is tropical, the one Western astrology uses. Your birth place sets the time zone, including daylight saving, which matters on days when the Moon changes sign. Everything runs in your browser: your birth details are not sent to a server.

What is my Moon sign?

The zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date and place above; add your birth time if you know it, for the exact degree and your Moon lines.

Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?

On most days, yes: the Moon stays in one sign all day. If it changed sign on your birth day, the calculator shows both signs and the time of the change, and your birth time decides between them.

What does my Moon sign say about me?

Astrologers read it as your emotional side: what comforts you, how you react and what you need at home and in close relationships. It is read together with your Sun and rising signs, not on its own.

Why is my Moon sign different on another site?

Usually because the Moon changed sign on your birth day and the other site used a different time or time zone, or no time at all. Check the time of the change shown above against your birth time.

Where are my Moon lines?

With a birth time, the calculator draws your four Moon lines on a world map and names the biggest city near each one. Open them on the 3D map to see every other line too.
