What your rising sign is

Your rising sign, also called your Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, seen from your birth place. The exact point where the horizon cut the zodiac is your Ascendant degree, and it opens the first house of your chart.

Astrologers read the rising sign as your style of approach: the first impression you give, the way you walk into a new room and the reflexes you show before you have had time to think. Where the Sun sign describes what you aim for, the rising sign describes how you go about it.

Why the birth time has to be exact

The Earth turns 1 degree every 4 minutes, so the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon once a day. On average a new sign rises about every two hours, but not evenly: depending on your latitude, some signs rise in well under an hour and others take three hours or more. A birth time that is off by 20 minutes can be enough to change your rising sign.

Use the time on your birth certificate or hospital record if you can. A remembered "around lunchtime" is not precise enough. After you enter your details, the calculator tells you how many minutes before or after your birth time the rising sign changes, so you can see at a glance whether your result is solid or close to the edge.

No birth time at all? The birth chart calculator still gives you every planet's sign, and the Moon sign calculator works from the date alone on most days.

Rising sign, Sun sign and Moon sign

Most readings start with three placements, often called the big three. The Sun sign is the one in horoscope columns, read as your core self and what you want from life. The Moon sign is read as your emotional nature: what comforts you and how you react. The rising sign is read as the outside layer, the manner other people meet first.

That is why two people with the same Sun sign can come across very differently. A Taurus with Aries rising is often described as quicker and more direct on first meeting than a Taurus with Cancer rising, even if both share the same steady core.

Your rising sign changes where you live

Your birth moment never changes, but the horizon does. Seen from another city, the same moment has a different degree rising in the east. Astrologers call this your relocated Ascendant and read it as the way you come across, and how you feel in yourself, while you live in that place.

This is where a rising sign meets astrocartography. Your AC lines on the map mark the places where each planet was rising at your birth. Stand on your Venus AC line and Venus sits on your relocated Ascendant; your rising sign there is the sign Venus was in. Under the calculator you get a list of the biggest city where you would have each of the 12 rising signs, a map of your AC lines, and your rising sign in any city you choose. For the full recast chart, open the relocation chart.

A relocated rising sign does not replace your birth chart; astrologers read it as a layer on top. Cost of living, work, visas and the people you love count for more than any line when you choose where to live.

How it is calculated

The Ascendant comes from your birth moment in Universal Time, the sidereal time at your birth place and the tilt of the Earth's axis, computed by the same engine as the map and checked against NASA JPL Horizons; see the method page. The zodiac is tropical, the one Western astrology uses. Time zones and daylight saving are found from your birth place. Everything runs in your browser: your birth details are not sent to a server.

What is my rising sign?

The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute and place of your birth. Enter your birth date, exact time and place in the calculator above to find it, with its degree.

Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. Ascendant is the technical name for the degree rising at your birth; the sign that degree falls in is your rising sign.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours on average, so without a time it could be almost any sign. If you only know a rough time, try the earliest and latest possible times: if both give the same sign, you can be fairly confident.

Why is my rising sign different on another site?

Usually the birth time, the time zone or daylight saving. Check that the place and time match your birth certificate. If your Ascendant is within a degree or two of a sign boundary, a few minutes of difference can change the sign.

Does my rising sign change if I move?

Your birth chart stays the same. In relocation astrology, though, the chart recast for a new city has a different Ascendant, and astrologers read it as how you come across there. The list under the calculator shows where you would have each rising sign.
