Best places for a fresh start

Why a fresh start means rising lines

The Ascendant (AC) is the eastern horizon, where a planet comes up. Astrologers read it as the self: your body, your manner and how you come across before anyone knows your story. A planet on the AC is said to color your first impression, which is exactly what changes when you arrive somewhere new.

AC lines are drawn as solid curves, not straight lines, because the point where a planet rises shifts with latitude. They also stop short of the poles. A planet with declination d rises and sets only up to latitude 90 minus d, ignoring the sign, so far north or south some AC lines simply end.

The five fresh start lines

• Sun AC. The image of a sunrise: self-expression, confidence and being seen for who you are from the first meeting. It can also bring the pressure of always being on.
• Jupiter AC. Optimism and a sense of being larger than life, curious about other cultures and quick to say yes. The usual caution is saying yes to too much.
• Venus AC. You are read as softer and more appealing, with an easy social manner and an eye for style. Easy company, though tradition notes a pull toward pleasing people.
• Mars AC. Bold and active: courage, directness, sport and a quick temper. Exciting for some, abrasive for others, and rarely quiet.
• North Node AC. Growth through meeting the world head on: new habits, a fresh image and encounters that seem to push you along your path. It is switched off in the Lines tab by default; the list still counts it.

A fresh start is more than a place

People often open this list when a chapter has closed and they are wondering what comes next. The map can give that question a shape, by showing where tradition sees your confidence or momentum emphasized. It cannot tell you whether to change anything, and no line is a reason to leave a job, a home or a person.

Your relocated Ascendant tells the same story from the chart side. Click a city and the panel gives the sign rising there for your birth moment, plus any planet within 5 degrees of that new Ascendant. Astrologers read a change of rising sign as a change in how you meet the world, which is why it is worth a look before any new start. See the relocation chart page.

Because AC lines are about you rather than your circumstances, many astrologers treat them as useful for a long stay as well as a move: a semester, a sabbatical, a season somewhere new. And because they curve, a short trip north or south can change your distance to a line a lot. Click the exact place you have in mind rather than trusting the nearest big city.
